Tim Haasnoot is the director of ProSea Marine Education, a Dutch educational NGO. He started his professional career at ProSea in 2015 and has served as its director since 2020. Over the years, he has developed extensive knowledge and experience on the various sustainability challenges within the maritime industry.
Tim’s core mission is to foster knowledge exchange between stakeholders and drive the maritime industry towards more sustainable choices. It is his personal belief that maritime professionals who are aware of their environment will make more sustainable choices. As such, he is a strong advocate for emphasising the ‘human element’ in all innovation trajectories.
In his daily work Tim works with a wide range of stakeholders, including maritime companies, training institutes and universities, scientists, policymakers and environmental NGOs, at both European and international level. His activities include developing and conducting sustainability training courses, organising knowledge exchange events and workshops, and advocating for the integration of sustainability topics into the training standards of seafarers and fishers (e.g. STCW and STCW-F Convention of the International Maritime Organization). Through his interactions with maritime professionals, Tim has gained valuable insights in the challenges maritime professionals face when striving to adopt more sustainable practices in their daily work.
He holds an MSc in Aquaculture and Marine Resource Management from Wageningen University, with a specialisation in fishing gear innovations and socio-technical transitions, an interdisciplinary field that considers both technological innovation and the broader social, political, and economic context in which the innovation is embedded.
