With a robust academic background, Prof. Ts. Dr. Muhammad Zaly Shah Muhammad Hussein received the Sultan of Kedah’s Gold Medal in 1987. In 2002, he received a Gold Medal for the Best Research Presentation at the Annual National Science Fellowship Workshop in Malaysia.
He has been recognized for his teaching excellence with the Best Lecturer Award (Anugerah Pengajaran Terbaik) in 2006 and the Excellent Service Award (Anugerah Perkhidmatan Cemerlang) in 2004 and 2008.
As a visiting scientist under the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) in 2007, Prof. Zaly Shah conducted research at Kyoto University and the National Institute of Environmental Science in Tsukuba, Japan.
Since 2012, Prof. Zaly Shah has been an active member of the Board of Directors at the Johor Public Transportation Commission (PAJ), contributing to the enhancement of public transportation in Johor. His leadership and expertise have been recognized through his role as a lead assessor for Supply Chain Management and Logistics at the Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA).
Prof. Zaly Shah’s innovative work has been recognized with several awards, including the Runner-Up position for the Vice Chancellor Innovation Award in 2014 and the Best Innovation Award from the Office of the Registrar, UTM in 2013. His project ‘An Improved Travel Safety for Urban Commuters Using an iTracks System’ earned a Silver Medal at the Invention, Innovation, and Design (IID) Competition in 2013.
In 2020, Prof. Zaly Shah was honored with the ‘Anugerah Prolifik Staf Akademik (Kategori Penyeliaan Pelajar Penyelidikan PhD)’ by the Faculty of Built Environment and Surveying, UTM. He also received the ‘Anugerah Kualiti Penjenamaan (Kategori Penulisan/Komentar Media Cetak)’ from the same faculty in 2020.
Being a registered professional Technologist with the Malaysian Board of Technologists (MBOT), he specializes in Transportation Planning and Logistics, focusing on sustainable transportation, active mobility, pedestrian/crowd modeling, and GIS-Transportation.
Prof. Zaly currently serves as a professor in transportation planning and the Deputy Dean (Research, Development, and Innovation) at the Faculty of Built Environment and Surveying, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. He is also the President of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Malaysia, representing the logistics and transportation industry in Malaysia.
