Dr. Islam Abdelbary is an Egyptian economist and Associate Professor of Transport Economics at the Arab Academy for Science and Technology. He currently serves as Head of Academic Departments and Vice Dean for Postgraduate Studies and Research at the College of International Transport and Logistics, alongside his role as Economic Consultant for the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UNESCWA).
He earned his PhD from the University of Plymouth (UK) and completed his postdoctoral research at the University of Michigan (USA). He also holds several advanced academic diplomas from Johns Hopkins University, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, the University of Cambridge, University College London, and the American University in Cairo.
Dr. Abdelbary’s research focuses on transport economics, institutions, sustainability, and economic development. He has authored books and numerous peer-reviewed articles on development reform policies in developing economies. Beyond academia, he serves as a professional analyst for high-profile research projects commissioned by the Egyptian government, the Arab League, the European Union, and the World Health Organisation.
His contributions have been recognised with multiple national and international honours, including the 2025 State Encouragement Award in Management and Social Science and the 2019 Ibn Khaldun Prize in Economics.
